There, in this industrial, uninhabited but intensively used area, we manned our temporary web radio and research station so we could do our fieldstudy and experience the area, and work on Portscapes ON AIR Station Maasvlakte. We are part of a group of 10 artists, invited by Mariana and Max from Latitudes to artistically explore this industrial landscape. Because we always live for a shorter or longer period in a place to do our research for FGA, we decided to commit ourselves fully to the project and actually live on the Maasvlakte, and try to understand what we see. But also to explore the possibility of a permanent research station or AIR (artist-in-residency). Thanks About PORTSCAPES Portscapes involves artists from The Netherlands, Mexico, Austria, Spain and Great Britain. By creating events, temporary art works, performances, photography, video work and excursions in and about the port area, Portscapes evolved as a kind of cultural guidebook to the port area, focusing on the future and Maasvlakte 2.
Lino Hellings is beeldend kunstenaar. Uitgeverij Lima: www.kramer.demon.nl *Oude nummers van p.i.t. zijn via de website van uitgeverij Lima te downloaden Aflevering 6 John Lonsdale MAGICAL LANDSCAPE: BETWEEN INTENTION AND CONTROL John Lonsdale is based in both Amsterdam and Northumberland. In 1991 he lived for a year on a nature reserve before graduating from the Architectural Association in London in 1995 The same school Rem Koolhaas went. He is currently teaching at the Rietveld Academy and the Academy of Architecture in Amsterdam. In 2001 he was awarded the Prix de Rome for Landscape Architecture and Urbanism for his work called ‘Shifting Horizons’, a study into 'listening to the land' and how not to resist the forces of nature but to live with them. For our meeting with the architect John Lonsdale we set up both a trip to the island and a meeting with one of the designers of the Maasvlakte 2 project. It took some effort to get the permission to visit the islands that they call ‘de Boemerang’ and actually stand on it and experience the reality of new land reclamation. From our Station Maasvlakte on the shore we have been observing the island for weeks now, but how big and how high is the island? What is actually there to see? We embark on the Spirit with captain Sander Boom, and after a rough ride we set foot on the new land. A magical land where we meet 3 seals and find piece of mamouth tusk. But how do you negatiate with this island? John suggests to make more islands , drop our tools and leave it to nature as a beach. The second part of the day we had a conversation with engineer in hydraulics and morphologist Maarten Jansen on intentional and unintentional morphological effects. Maarten Jansen works for PUMA Projectorganisatie Uitbreiding Maasvlakte: PUMA is a consortium consisting of Koninklijke Boskalis Westminster NV and Van Oord NV. Maarten Jansen is on of the people who worked on the design and the models that shape Maasvlakte 2. John is interested in the drift of dunes and mud. Mud as a landscape that is sometimes fluid or liquid and other times hard and dry. He is fascinated by this fickel or uncertain landscape. The islands that are being made are at this moment also uncertain landscapes. John likes the wonderful clarity of intent the authors of the website Maasvlakte2 have in describing the islands under MV2 (Hinderplaat) as 'unintentional'. The islands are surely intentional, at least for the active nature lobby, only their shape is still unknown and unfixed. Or it could be that the engineers are able to predict the flow and deposition of muds and silt, through digital modelling, so as to approach a semblance of what may emerge as reality. We talk about the difference between intentional and unintentional design. How much are the designers and builders of the MV 2 in control of what is happening? How did other forces like economic and ecologic ones effect the shape of MV 2? How will the coastline be changed by this new land reclamation, and what will be the effect of the changing currents on the naturaly shaped sand bank Hinderplaat ? When we aks him if there would be a Maasvlakte 3 and 4, will the design process be the same? Maarten Jansen states something we enjoy very much: “This is the last project we wil work in this way. Next projects will be building with nature. We design a construction and nature can play with it and the final shape will be nature made”. ^www.johnlonsdale.org www.deltavissers.nl/hinderplaat.htm Aflevering 7 Achilleka Komguem and Lionel Manga IF YOU WANT A 'NOUVEAU PLAN', YOU ARE THE ONE TO DESIGN THE MAP Achilleka Komguem lives and works between Douala and Yaounde (Cameroon). He is an artist and editor of DiARTgonale, an English / French art magazine dedicated to contemporary art in Africa founded in 2007. Lionel Manga is a writer and cultural critic based in Douala. In this conversation, he announces that his next book might bear the title ‘Next Level’. They both were in Holland on the invitation of Lucia Babina and Zoë Gray for the project Talking About!. Our tour with Achilleka and Lionel along the harbour of Rotterdam starts in the renovated historic harbour in the city centre and continues along the north side of the harbour area of Schiedam and Vlaardingen. At Maassluis we take the ferry to the south side, to Rozenburg and take the Europaweg to the Maasvlakte. Lionel and Achillekà are interested to see the famous Rotterdam harbour. In Cameroon, a new deep sea port will be developed in the town of Kribi, and in Rotterdam they can take a look at what could be their future. They both are shocked to see the totally designed and ‘post-human’ Dutch urban landscape with designed nature, giant oil tanks, black mountains of coal, and the smell of the petro-chemical industry. They ask themselves: ‘where is the nature?’, ‘where are the people?’ and ‘what about the quality of life?’, and finally ‘do we want to reach this state?’. *Cameroon is ostensibly a democracy, but the same party has been in power since independence and the premier, Paul Biwa, shows little sign of stepping down. http://talkingabout-rotterdam.blogspot.com http://istrike.net DiARTgonale is distributed in Cameroon. It is published by ARTCE (Association Art pour la Conscientisation et l'Education) with the support of Lamia MEDDEB, Suisse. Email: diartgonale@yahoo.fr L'ivresse du papillon by Lionel Manga was published by Artistafrica / Edimontagne in 2008. This summer Talking About! invited six artists and cultural producers from Cameroon to visit the Netherlands: Ruth Belinga (artist, curator, Yaoundé), Goddy Leye (artist, founder of artist’s initiative Art Bakery, Douala), Hervé Youmbi (artist, member of the collective Cercle Kapsiki, Douala), Achillekà Komguen (artist, editor of newspaper Diartgonale, Yaoundé), Lionel Manga (writer and cultural critic, Douala), Achille Atina (cultural mediator, Douala). iStrike Foundation is officially registered and based in Rotterdam, The Netherlands, but operates at an international level as a collective subject. Aflevering 8 Aurelie Barbier and Martin Blum TESTOSTERONE, HORMONE CHICKENS Aurelie Barbier is a French urban planner specialised in emerging cities. Currently working for Urbaplan (an urban planning firm based in Switzerland) she has worked on various projects in Southern Europe and sub-Saharan African countries (Cameroon, Niger, Ghana). Over the past five years, she has focused on the definition of master plan, regulatory plan and slum upgrading projects through a comprehensive approach that includes both social and technical dimensions of urban development. In an attempt to develop a critical response to the current development of Rotterdam’s harbour we invited Aurélie Barbier to read the plans and try to help us understand the project we are involved in. At the moment there are many different projects being developed simultaneously in Rotterdam and the larger port area, including many new high-rise buildings, redevelopment of the city ports (Stadshavens) and the port extension Maasvlakte 2 (MV2). Compensatie boerenland? Co-siting? Bewoning?
